Snowpocalypse February 2021

Zina

Reposted from Facebook.

The snowpocalypse of Feb 2021 (just in case it isn't the only one in 2021). The beautiful musical accompaniment in the video is our generator.

No electricity from Cirro since 7 AM except for long enough to get the bacon half cooked and the spinach half wilted for omelettes.

Before that, rolling 15's every 2 hours since about 1AM. (Edit for clarity: that is a rolling 15 min of power ON, not 15 min of power OFF every 2 hours!)

After that, the ninja finally got the generator warmed up enough to finish the omelettes and warm up the leftover beef stew.

We've been warm throughout thanks to propane. We could have cooked with propane, too. But the prospect of warming up the trailer was too daunting.

The beasties are all staying inside. And Brent is keeping them fed and the ice broken on their water.

It got to 5 degrees last night. Expecting lower tonight. Will we break the 0 barrier? Pray not!

Update for the record: now 12 hours since power went off completely (oh, there WAS that less than 30 minute tease around 10). We're watching TV in the dark and charging our devices using a generator. Warm, thanks to the propane stoves.

As of 11pm, still no power. Came back on around 8:45. I don't know how long it lasted because I fell back asleep pretty fast. When I woke at 10:45, it was off again and from the feel of the house, has been off a while. Phone says 5 degrees outside.

Now 2:15am. Power on about 30 minutes. House thermometer says -0.9 degrees outside. 51 degrees and climbing inside. Lasted until 2:30 (out again). 4:30 electric back on. Off again at 5:30. Temp said 50 inside, -5 outside while it was online.

Now, 9am. No power since the brief respite at 4:30-5:30. That makes 9am our 32nd hour of "rolling" outages. During which time, we've had power for about 5 different "turns" and less than 4 hours total. Not as advertised!

But we DID choose our location with full knowledge we were at the end of the line. We were semi-prepared. We improvised quickly. And things are going to be ok, soon. My heart goes out to those who are vulnerable and could not prepare for this!

Just "keepin' it real"... Got power again from 9:25 to 9:48. Got a bunch of dishes washed in hot water! Tankless water heater, FTW!

Got power again from 12:15 to 1pm. Washed dishes again  And, again at 2:15! This is getting to be a regular appointment! Didn't even wash dishes this time. I'm actually typing this on my computer (not my phone).

Just gonna keep updating, so I have a record: off at 5pm, back on at 5:15. And...OFF at 8:30. Time for bed! On at 10:30.

I forgot to mention until now - almost 24 hours later - maybe because it's not fun to revisit? We made the heart wrenching decision yesterday afternoon to take a complete loss on our greenhouse citrus crop  and we stopped trying to keep it above freezing. At last check, it's staying between 15 and 20. We're making plans for how to shore up the greenhouse for the next cold snap!
